Children in Haiti do not have a right to attend school. It is a privilege reserved for the rich and well-connected. Most schools that are available to poor children are privately operated by chirches. These churches rely on donations and sponsorships to relieve the cost of operation. The Heart for Children sponsorship program is for students at Tabarre Christian Academy and Mirebalais Christian Academy.
In total there are approximately 300 children in pre-kindergarden through 6th grade who are in need. Sponsorship for a student covers their tuition, uniforms, books and supplies. Each child is fed a meal every day, even when school is out. This meal is often their only source of nourishment.
